Under $20 Grocery Haul (with tips!)

Image

Some people have the impression that it is very expensive to keep a plant based diet. I actually find that it is very affordable. I’d like to bust the myth that fruits and veggies will cost you an arm and a leg. I spent just south of $20 for all of this:

  • 1 seedless watermelon
  • 1 head of cauliflower
  • 1 bunch of celery
  • 2 eggplants
  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 zucchinis
  • 1 bag of baby carrots
  • 2 bunches of bananas
  • 4 limes
  • 1 ginger root
  • 1 jar of green olives
  • 6 cans of various beans
  • 1 bag of Spanish rice
  • 1 bag of whole wheat pita

I live walking distance from a market so I make mini trips to the store often. I would say I do a “major” grocery run maybe once every six weeks. Pictured above is what I would call a “medium” grocery hall. Plenty of food to get me through 7-12 days combined with little trips to the store here and there for staples like lettuce/leafy greens and almond milk. My fiance and I keep very different diets (he is mostly paleo aka high protein, low carb which is basically the opposite of a vegan diet). So pictured above will most likely be consumed by me and me alone!

TIPS for grocery bargains:

  • Buy what is on sale. That watermelon was on sale and only cost like 3 bucks!
  • Buy variety vs large quantity unless it’s a staple. This will keep your taste buds entertained.
  • Shop at ethnic food stores. I find the best deals for produce (and the best variety) at Middle Eastern & Mexican groceries.
  • Buy RIPE fruit if you plan to eat it within a day or two of purchase. You will find great deals on the extra ripe fruit, and ripe fruit is what we should be consuming. I got like 15 bananas for 99 cents, woop woop!
