Treadmill Dilemma: To buy or not to buy!

I recently just emailed the following to one of my favorite bloggers/youtubers, Monica from Run, Eat, Repeat! The minute I pressed “send” I realized I should probably post the question to the blog. I would love as much feedback as possible!!!

“Hi Monica!

I have a question: Should I get a treadmill?! Is it a worth while investment? I’m totally torn!
I have been going back and forth on the decision for weeks. I won an instagram contest and received a $1000 gift card to Amazon.  I am a pretty frugal person, but I bought my hubby a bike and still have like $600 and am thinking about investing in a treadmill.
You have a treadmill, right? Can you recommend one for someone who plans to run 1-2 full marathons a year? I read that “residential” treadmills aren’t a great investment and “light commercial” is the way to go (aka hotel style), but I probably wouldn’t need a “commercial” for my purposes.
Last November I ran the Seattle Marathon, it was my first full! I’m registered for the full Portland Marathon this October. I live in Eugene, OR and I ❤ running!
I’m just going to list the pro’s and con’s for you and my thought process.
Pros to owning a treadmill would be:
– I’ve become a bit of a chicken and now I don’t love running in the dark. And for at least half the year running early mornings or evenings = running in the dark.
-rain. I wouldn’t have to run in shit weather.
-I have babies on the brain and am considering pregnancy in the future. I figure it would be awesome to have a treadmill at home to get back in pre-baby shape and I imagine I won’t want to take long runs away from a baby if I’m breast feeding.
Cons to owning a treadmill would be:
-I’m scared I’d buy it and never use it. I’ve never been a huge fan of treadmill running but that’s in a gym setting. In my own garage I could just role out of bed, watch whatever I want, where whatever I want etc. IDK what I dislike more, treadmill running or running in the pitch black freezing rain. Probably the latter though, except for the occasional brave run here and there.
-yeah, that’s basically the only con. but it’s a big one!
How do you feel about running on a treadmill? Do you think a residential treadmill would work or should I definitely spring for a more expensive one? What kind do you have?”
Alright Bloggers, I’d love your opinion if you have one too!
Thanks in advance!!! 🙂
